26 JULY - 28 JULY 2024
"RIVER DEEP, MOUNTAIN HIGH"
CROSSING ALPS
170 KILOMETRES WITH 10'000 M D+
From the Eiger to Lake Geneva, an exceptional journey
through the Swiss Alps.
When a 100 Miles begins in one of the most iconic places in the Swiss Alps, at the foot of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, the experience gets off to a flying start. But it's important not to get too carried away by this touristy start.
As soon as you leave Lauterbrunnen at the foot of the famous Staubbach waterfall, things get serious with a climb towards the car-free village of Mürren, the birthplace of winter sports. If you look up, you might just catch a glimpse of ... James Bond. The Schiltorn, which dominates the area, was the setting for one of the Bond films, "Her Majesty's Secret Service".
To get back to more sporting adventure, this first climb of almost 2,000m of D+ will probably have calmed your first 'mad dog' ardour. At the Col de Sefinafurgga, we enter the most alpine part of the route, with a spectacular descent to Griesalp and a continuation towards the magnificent Oeschinensee. Even so, you may have to weave in and out of the tourists a little, given the undeniable attraction of this incredible lake.
What's next? A postcard view of the Bernese Oberland, with the slopes of the wild Bunderchrinde before the resort of Adelboden, the famous Simmental cows in the Lenk region and the magnificent traditional chalets of Gstaad-Saanen.
The end of the adventure will be in French-speaking territory at the foot of the Gastlosen, the "dolomites of Switzerland", and the crossing of the Pays-d'Enhaut before the final ascent to the Rochers-de-Naye, where you can get a glimpse the finish line some 1600 metres... lower down.
